Can dogs eat
Beans?
In moderation
Yes, in small amounts, if they are plain and fully cooked. Never offer raw or undercooked beans (PetMD flags raw kidney beans as toxic), and skip baked, refried and chili beans, which are loaded with ingredients dogs should not eat.

Why it’s fine in small amounts
Plain cooked beans such as black, pinto and lima beans can be a decent occasional treat for dogs. PetMD describes them as a good source of protein and fiber, low in fat, with iron, potassium, magnesium and antioxidants. The ASPCA also lists beans among garden vegetables that can be given as snacks in moderation.
The type and preparation matter enormously. PetMD warns that raw kidney beans are toxic to dogs, pointing to phytohemagglutinin, a lectin that kidney beans carry in higher amounts than other beans, and it advises keeping even cooked kidney beans to a minimum. It also says raw or undercooked beans of any kind can upset the stomach or cause diarrhea, so soak dried beans and cook them thoroughly. Canned beans carry a lot of sodium, and refried, baked and chili beans bring in fat, sugar, garlic, chili powder and other spices. Fat can set off pancreatitis, and onion and garlic are harmful.
Even safe beans can cause gas and digestive upset if your dog eats a lot, and PetMD suggests starting with a few so you can spot any upset or sign of a food allergy. A dog on a complete diet does not need beans, so treat them as a small extra.
Benefits
- Good source of protein and fiber
- Low in fat when cooked plain
- Provide iron, potassium, magnesium and antioxidants
- Plain cooked beans work as a small, filling topper
Risks
- PetMD flags raw kidney beans as toxic because of a lectin called phytohemagglutinin
- Raw or undercooked beans can cause stomach upset or diarrhea
- Canned beans carry a lot of sodium
- Baked, refried and chili beans contain sugar, fat, garlic and spices
- Large amounts can cause gas and digestive upset
How to serve it safely
PetMD recommends plain beans prepared from dried rather than canned if you can: soak dried beans overnight, then cook them thoroughly, with no oil, salt, butter or spices. Black, lima, pinto and garbanzo beans are all options. Kidney beans are acceptable only fully cooked and in small amounts.
Start with a few beans as a topper and watch for gas, bloating or diarrhea. As a general guide, PetMD suggests about a teaspoon mixed into food for a small dog, and up to about half a cup (120 ml) of cooked beans for a very large one. Treats should stay under about 10% of daily calories.

If your dog already ate it
A dog that ate a few plain cooked beans will probably get gas at most. Offer water and watch.
If your dog ate raw or undercooked kidney beans, call your vet, ASPCA Animal Poison Control at (888) 426-4435 or Pet Poison Helpline at (855) 764-7661 (US; fees may apply). For a large helping of baked or refried beans, call your vet, especially if there was garlic or onion, or if vomiting, diarrhea or belly pain follows. Do not make your dog vomit at home.
Frequently asked questions
Can dogs eat black beans?
Yes, plain and fully cooked in small amounts. PetMD lists black beans among the safe options when prepared without seasoning.
Are kidney beans poisonous to dogs?
Raw ones can be. PetMD lists raw kidney beans as toxic because of their phytohemagglutinin, a type of lectin, and it says cooked kidney beans should only be given in small amounts. Never feed raw or undercooked beans.
Can dogs eat baked beans?
No. PetMD says baked beans are made with molasses or brown sugar and spices, and refried and chili beans are similar problems.
Do beans give dogs gas?
They can, especially in larger amounts. If your dog gets gas, bloating or diarrhea, cut back or stop.
