How this works
Vets start from the resting energy requirement (RER): 70 × body weight in kg0.75. Multiplying RER by a life-stage factor gives the daily energy requirement. The factors here are the ranges in the American Animal Hospital Association’s 2021 nutrition guidelines.
These are starting points. Individual dogs vary a lot, so weigh your dog every few weeks and adjust by body condition. Treats should stay under about 10% of daily calories. For weight loss, puppies of giant breeds, pregnancy or any illness, plan amounts with your vet.
