Best dog breeds for families with kids

No breed is automatically safe around children, but some are far better suited to busy family life than others. Look for a dog that is affectionate, tolerant of noise and handling, easy to train and comfortable around other dogs, because family homes usually involve all of that at once.

This list highlights breeds with strong ratings for exactly those qualities. Be realistic about the trade-offs as well. A bouncy, big dog can knock over a toddler without meaning any harm, while a delicate small dog can be hurt by an enthusiastic hug.

The AVMA is clear that a dog's individual history and behavior matter more than its breed, and that a baby or small child should never be left alone with a dog, however gentle that dog seems. Treat this ranking as a way to start your search, not as a guarantee.

How we ranked them

To qualify, a breed needs a rating of 4 or 5 for being good with kids. We then score it by doubling that kids rating and adding its affection, trainability and good-with-other-dogs ratings. The highest score comes first. These ratings come from our breed profiles and describe the typical dog of each breed, so every dog is an individual, and no rating replaces supervising children and dogs together.

See how we research and rate breeds.

Before you choose

Supervision comes first. Stay close whenever young children and a dog share a space, and never leave a baby or small child alone with any dog. Teach children to ask an owner before petting a dog and to avoid rough games like wrestling and tug-of-war.

Give your dog a quiet place of its own, such as a bed or crate in a calmer room, and make it off-limits to kids. A crate-training routine helps a puppy see that space as a safe spot.

Start training early and keep it kind. The AVMA recommends gradually introducing puppies to new people, places and situations, and veterinary behaviorists recommend reward-based methods. New to dogs? Check the first-time owner list too, and use our puppy first-week checklist when your dog comes home.

Frequently asked questions

Which dog is best for a family with toddlers?

No breed is guaranteed, but look for a sturdy, tolerant, easygoing dog with a high kids rating, and plan to supervise at all times. A very large or boisterous dog can knock over a toddler, and a toy-size dog can be injured by rough handling, so size and energy deserve as much thought as breed.

Are some breeds more likely to bite children?

The AVMA says a dog's individual history and behavior, not its breed, determine whether it bites, and it notes little evidence that particular breeds are more likely to bite. Socialization, training and supervision matter most.

Should a family get a puppy or an adult dog?

A puppy needs a lot of time, patient training and supervision, which can be hard with small children. An adult dog from a rescue or breeder often comes with a clearer picture of energy, manners and how it reacts to kids. Either can work if you match the dog to your household.

Do mixed-breed dogs make good family pets?

Many do. The catch is that a mixed breed's size, energy and temperament can be harder to predict, especially from a puppy, so meeting the dog and asking about its history tells you more than guessing from its looks.
