Best “hypoallergenic” dog breeds (and what that really means)
No dog is truly hypoallergenic. The proteins that trigger allergies are found in a dog's dander, saliva and urine, not in the hair itself, so even a breed that barely sheds can cause symptoms. Studies have found no consistent difference in allergen levels between breeds sold as hypoallergenic and other dogs.
Individual reactions do vary, though, and low-shedding breeds are where many allergic people start looking. This list gathers breeds that our profiles flag as lower-allergen, plus any breed with the lowest shedding rating, and puts the least-shedding dogs first.
Think of it as a shortlist to test, not a promise. Low shedding often goes with high grooming needs, so you may trade sneezing for regular brushing and haircuts. If you have allergies or asthma, see an allergist before bringing a dog home, and spend time with the actual dog you are considering.

How we ranked them
A breed makes this list if our profile flags it as lower-allergen or gives it the lowest shedding rating (1). Breeds are then ordered by shedding, least first, with a lower grooming need breaking ties. Ratings come from our breed profiles and describe the typical dog, and every dog is an individual. Being on the list does not mean a breed is safe for people with allergies.
Before you choose
Start with a medical opinion. An allergist can test what you react to and talk through options such as medication or allergy shots (immunotherapy). Then spend real time with the specific dog you are considering, ideally more than once, because reactions differ from dog to dog.
At home, a few habits help: keep the dog out of the bedroom, choose hard floors over carpet where you can, vacuum often with a HEPA filter and wash bedding regularly. If you can, have someone else do the grooming, and brush outdoors.
Be cautious with mixed breeds sold as hypoallergenic, because a crossbreed's coat is hard to predict and the label is often marketing. A low-shedding coat can also mean heavy grooming, so compare our low-maintenance dogs and try the breed selector to balance both.
Frequently asked questions
Is there really a hypoallergenic dog?
No. Both the AKC and the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology say no dog is completely allergen-free. Individual dogs differ in how much they trigger symptoms, but a breed label does not guarantee fewer.
Does a dog that doesn't shed cause fewer allergies?
Not reliably. Allergens come from proteins in dander, saliva and urine rather than from hair, so low shedding does not predict allergen exposure. Some low-shedding breeds have tested as high as other dogs in studies.
Are doodles and other poodle mixes hypoallergenic?
Not necessarily. A mixed-breed coat is unpredictable, and “hypoallergenic” is mostly a marketing term for crossbreeds. Spend time with the individual dog before you commit.
Can I get used to a dog if I'm allergic?
An allergist can discuss options such as immunotherapy, which aims to build tolerance over time. Ask before you adopt, since results vary from person to person.
